6 October Running out of time and patience

Another week and Gérard has to give me the bad news that the 2 by 6 pine we are buying from Montreal is not on the truck this week. Again. He originally told us 10 days to 2 weeks. Now it's 3 weeks to four weeks. It's obviously on Acadian time, sort of timeless. Close to Mic Maw time. This must be how they get the order: accept it even if you know it'll take a month!
Meanwhile the rain pours down drowning the building, demonstrating how water-tight the OSB floor is: I have to vacuum up about 120 gallons.
We're supposed to be at the tail-end of some tropical storm called Ophelia. It seems the more we know about the weather, the more the news business exaggerates. We may soon be building bunkers. I thought we would at least be in an old Humprey Bogart Miami movie with 100 mph gales blowing trees across the screen.
So, we let the rain rain and go to Sydney to do a couple of jobs there. I have to pick up a door which they didn't have back in March... I also shop around for insulation, a metal roof, and a host of smaller things. I love to talk to Cape Bretoners: it's as entertaining as Ireland. Lots of talk, lots of humor. In fact it feels like Cork city back in the 80s... Lots of unemployment, a bit drab but people managing to have an okay time.
I call by North Air to find out hjow to install the windows and doors we bought and meet a very funny little Yorkshire terrier, a miniature black schnauser and the owner's wife who is not a dog but from Ahunsic in Montreal, back 45 years ago. Lovely French conversation about Cape Breton and Montreal. She is convinced she's still with her husband because they can't understand each other: perfectly Canada, I remark. How do you think the country stays together.
So we go home with a bath tub, two sinks and two medecine cabinets. Now all we need is a house to put them in.

I
